In the winter of 2018, Marci had a conversation with a friend who had been diagnosed the\u00a0<\/span>previous<\/span>\u00a0year with a Stage 0 breast cancer, about whether she thought, since she\u00a0was super healthy and had no history of breast cancer in her\u00a0family, if Marci should\u00a0keep getting mammograms.<\/span>\u00a0Knowing mammograms do have\u00a0<\/span>radiation, was that a good idea for her\u00a0super small breasts?<\/span><\/p>\n \u200b<\/span><\/span>The friend suggested she\u00a0get an\u00a0<\/span>ultrasound<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>because they are better at detecting breast cancer in women with dense breasts… Marci\u00a0had never heard that before. \u00a0So… she\u00a0asked the PA at her\u00a0OBGYN office, who\u00a0suggested she\u00a0do both the 3-D mammogram which is the standard AND\u00a0the ultrasound. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Marci went in the same day for both screenings and the<\/span>\u00a0m<\/span>ammogram was negative and missed a stage I cancer that\u00a0<\/span>the ultrasound found.<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Then…\u00a0the MRI (ordered after a\u00a0biopsy to check\u00a0your lymph nodes and re-check breasts)\u00a0found another smaller stage I cancer. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Had Marci\u00a0not had the ultrasound and waited until the\u00a0mammogram saw the\u00a0cancer, it most likely would have been an advanced stage. \u00a0T<\/span>here are\u00a0many women fighting a late stage breast cancer because a mammogram did not see their cancer at an early stage.<\/span><\/p>\n \u200b<\/span><\/span>Marci ended up getting a bi-lateral mastectomy which\u00a0got rid of the cancer, but\u00a0because her\u00a0Oncotype DX (tumor typing)\u00a0score was 16, and was under 50 years\u00a0old, at the time, they recommended\u00a0four rounds of “preventative” chemo. Marci\u00a0was freaked out and was concerned about loosing her\u00a0hair with\u00a0two young kids and about to start a new job. She\u00a0didn’t want to look sick.<\/span><\/p>\n \u200b<\/span><\/span>At the recommendation of Dr. Nova at UC\u00a0Health who gave her\u00a0a second opinion for\u00a0chemo, She\u00a0checked into using the Penguin\u00a0cold cap to keep her\u00a0hair. \u00a0Based on her\u00a0research the Penguin cap had the best results so, She\u00a0chose to do that one.\u00a0There was only a website with some basic info. Marci’s\u00a0brain was already\u00a0full of cancer info and statistics\u00a0but, with the help of her\u00a0amazing husband,\u00a0Chad, and a few “type-A” friends, including Shannon, we figured it out. Marci\u00a0had\u00a0both her\u00a0husband and a friend\u00a0help cap her\u00a0each treatment.\u00a0It was not as cold as she\u00a0expected when using the cap, she\u00a0just bundled up in layers and drank warm tea,\u00a0and was so worth it in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0After 4 rounds of chemo – Marci\u00a0should have lost all her\u00a0hair\u00a0between 14 and 21 days after the first treatment, but over the course of the 3 months – She\u00a0only\u00a0lost about 20%, and it was not in any specific spot or in a clump, but single hairs\u00a0all over,\u00a0<\/span>so no one but Marci\u00a0could tell<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u200b<\/span><\/span>Shannon and Marci\u00a0were motivated to\u00a0help other women save their hair during chemo by helping them\u00a0know how to use the cap, and care for their\u00a0hair as well as\u00a0provide a real person to help train them\u00a0and their\u00a0helpers so they\u00a0don’t have to figure it out on their own. We also want to\u00a0push awareness around the risks of\u00a0having dense\u00a0breasts… that mammograms may not find cancer in dense breasts,\u00a0and that women with\u00a0dense breasts are at higher
